In 1971 a group of trail riders in the
area, called the Geronimo Village Trial Riders, found the need for fire
suppression that was close to home. On December 1st of 1972, the
department received its charter. There first truck was purchased
shortly after the charter was received and it had a 750 gpm pump and a
500 gallon tank capacity. The truck on the top right was either
the original or one of the original trucks. The first truck was
originally housed at the chief's house, home of Ed Wright, the first
Chief. To promote the department, we had a community trash pickup
which eventually made it in the paper in 1974.
In 1973 Marvin Kolar, Vice President and later that year elected Chief, work out a deal
between a local land owner to donate land to be owned by the fire
department for our first station. With the help of the community not
long after the land was turned over to us, the first station was built.
The station was a two bay station located off of Cartwright trail.
Today, the station is known as the North Station. It was dedicated
in the late 90's to
Marvin Kolar for the decades of work that he has put into this
department. Before the land was acquired where Station 1 is
located now, one of the trucks was kept out under a big oak tree near
the center of the district on the O'Neill's land near the current
central station.
The original central station was a
large barn that was refinished on the inside with bathroom and a kitchen
area. Today, we use the old station for a meeting hall and the public
can use it for events and gatherings. It is also a local voting site.
Around the same time the land was acquired for station 1 we opened the
thrift shop which is run by one of our original members, Martha Hand,
and a few of our general members. Martha Hand was treasurer for close
to twenty years, before taking the position of Chaplain. The
complex is know as the Weynand Center which is named after one of our
fallen firefighters. It contains the Hall, Thrift Shop, Training
Facilities, and BBQ Stand.
In 1995, we
built Station 3, which is dedicated to Martha Hand for her thirty plus
wonderful years of service on the fire department. It was located
on Potranco Road near 1604 and was a two bay station. See bottom
left picture.
A lot of
activity has happened over the last few years to advance this department. In 2003 we purchased a
brand new Ford F-550 Brush Truck and the Emergency Services District #2
purchased a new KME pumper. In 2003 we purchased a refurbished fire
truck (Pierce Arrow) from Trumbull, CT. In 2004, we expanded the
over-filled thrift shop to make room for increased items and sales. The
department also acquired a 2004 American LaFrance Pumper Tanker to
replace the 1968 Ford Tanker. This tanker is equipped with a 3000
gallon tank. In 2005 the department was given a grant from the Texas
Forest Service to purchase another brush truck. Later that year we
bought a 2006 Ford F350 and put into service which replaced a 1984 Ford
F250. That truck was retrofitted with our cascade and turned into the
M.A.C. (Mobile Air Cascade). And our most recent truck, the 2003 KME
pumper, was put into service in early 2006. In October of 2005, station
3 was closed and disassembled.
In January 2007 the ESD and Bexar County,
with the help of Pulte Homes agreed to a site for the new south station
at the intersection of Spur Ranch and Cagnon Road.
